With the support of Metinvest Group's Yenakiieve Iron & Steel Works, a gym for people with special needs was opened in Makiivka. In terms of the sports equipment, experienced coaches, care and attention – the organizers tried to do everything to prove that a healthy lifestyle is possible for everyone.
This is another project that is part of Metinvest Group's "We Improve the City" competition. Makiivka city's "Nika Plus" Association for People with Special Needs purchased a wall-mounted ladder, four large exercise machines, a ping-pong table, pulley weights, dynamometers and balls, and organized a gym on the premises of the Chervonogvardeiskaya "Optimist" District Organization for People with Special Needs.
The organizers are sure that thanks to this initiative, visitors will feel needed, strong and important. Furthermore, there have been cases when retired people who exercised on such machines were able to rehabilitate after cerebrovascular accidents, myocardial infarctions and other illnesses.
"I recently had a stroke and therefore I cannot try all exercise machines, though I really want to. I will start with walking, and then I will gradually increase the load," said Svetlana Vereschagina of her future plans; she is a participant of the Makiivka City "Nadezhda" Society for the Disabled. "Disabled people, children and the elderly can go to the gym. We are open to anyone who wants."
"Here I can exercise on power and cycling machines, a fitness ball; I lift dumbbells and I can shoot a pneumatic rifle," said Nataliya Sitnikova, Sports Committee Chairperson of the Makiivka City "Nika Plus" Organization for People with Special Needs and a multiple champion in intellectual sports at different levels. "What does it give me? First of all, one's muscles become stronger, secondly when one plays checkers the head works and thirdly, I acquired very many friends.
Project participants wholeheartedly thanked Metinvest Group and personally Yenakiieve Iron & Steel Works General Director Aleksandr Podkorytov for the assistance.
Yenakiieve Iron & Steel Works traditionally supports health care, education and sports in Makiivka and realizes city residents' initiatives through its "We Improve the City" social project competition. In 2013, Yenakiieve Iron & Steel Works channelled UAH 2 million into Makiivka's health care, including the refurbishment of the Pulmonary Department of City Hospital #2, including the replacement of windows and doors, organisation of a salt room, and financial aid to the Maryinsk Veterans Hospital.
