METINVEST starts PCI construction at Yenakiieve Steel

“Pulverized Coal Injection Complex Construction” (PCI) investment project at Yenakiieve Iron and Steel Works, Metinvest Group, passed on the next milestone. This new energy-saving facility, with the budget of USD 115.5 mln., received “Construction” milestone, which is planned to be executed at the beginning of 2014. Complex construction will enable to reduce hot metal production costs due to the complete natural gas replacing and partial change of coke by pulverized coal at Yenakiieve Steel. PCI construction at Yenakiieve Steel is carried out under long-term Metinvest Technological Development Strategy.

The site, which is provided for Blast Furnaces No. 1, 3, 5 PCI Complex erection, is ready for the new construction. This complex will be located at the area of dismantled Blast Furnace No.4, which was decommissioned in autumn 2011. New facility location will afford full integration of this complex in Yenakiieve Steel process chain.

Equipment capacity of Yenakiieve Steel PCI complex is rated for pulverized coal injection in the volume of 180 kg/t HM and amounted to 590 th.t/y. This Complex will comprise coal pulverizing area, tubular belt conveyor, stock house, coal stockyard, screening and crushing area. PCI technology complies with legislative regulations concerning air emissions. Closed loop of the dust flow and facility tightness are main technical solutions of the project. All by-products are reused.

It should be reminded, that “PCI Complex construction at Yenakiieve Steel” project was started in March 2007. During five years it passed three milestones, in which SE Ukrgipromez developed feasibility study, state inspections were passed, basic engineering was accomplished and binding processes for equipment supply were rendered. Kuttner Company (Germany) has been defined as Basic Equipment Supplier. Nowadays project passed to FEL-4 (Construction), which comprises construction permitting stage, detailed design and engineering development. Simultaneously, basic and auxiliary equipment purchasing will be carried out.The final stage of FEL-4 milestone is the construction, erection and commissioning.
